“Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying”

Sometimes it feels like no matter what we do, we will always be struggling. No matter how far forward we go, that we will always be just behind getting a step ahead. I guess some might say that is pessimistic, but is that just being realistic? We are always told by others that we have to have hope and look to the future, but what if we just can’t do that? Are we doomed to just stay in limbo and just waste our lives away? Can we ever escape or get out of that?

I don’t think that I have any answers honestly. I know that I have been both optimistic and pessimistic in my life. I think sometimes we get tired of those people who are always happy and looking on the bright side of life. It is often easy to dismiss these people and say that they are just faking it and they don’t know what they are talking about, that they don’t live in reality.

We all have different lives though. We go through different experiences. There are people who do honestly just have it easier than others. Some people are born into lives of poverty or abuse, but then there are others who will never know or experience this stuff. Sometimes it is honestly easier for some to speak about hope and the future because in their mind they have one, but what about those who can’t see a future due to their current state? If you are barely getting through life now, how are you supposed to look with hope on a future that you fear is more of the same?

“Shawshank Redemption” is one of my favorite movies and there are many quotes from that movie that I love. One that I often quote is “get busy live or get busy dying”, because honestly that is what it comes down to. Sometimes we live in an unfair state, life often doesn’t treat us how we want to be treated and sadly there are those who simply “get busy dying”. I think often times we can let ourselves get so overwhelmed that we forget to look up. We forget that there can be a future despite all the crap and chaos that is around us. So we really are all left with a choice, no matter how bad our current situation, to either see that as our forever reality or see that as a temporary situation.

We can all choose to see a future or simply give up. It depends on what kind of a person you are and what kind of people you have around you. Sometimes it is easy to get out of a bad place if you have others who are willing to help you, but also you must be strong and be willing to pull yourself up out of that muck no matter how dark or bad it gets. Sometimes you have to see and ask yourself if you really want to live or not and if you do, then why aren’t you doing it? It may not and more than likely isn’t as easy as just saying it, but if you aren’t willing to take a step for fear or simply because you have given up, no one will do it for you. So you either “get busy living or get busy dying”, those are our only choices.
